Come out into the field with our guides to learn how to build a safe, efficient and effective fire for staying warm and for cooking a basic skill for the campsite as well as an emergency shelter site.
During this hands-on skills session, participants will learn how to identify materials to use to build a fire (even when everything is wet), and how start a fire using matches, flint stick, bow drill and other natural materials at hand. Our instructors will also cover how to create a safe fire ring and review wood collection, following the Leave No Trace principles. From keeping warm to purifying water to cooking food, fire-making is a fundamental survival skill for anyone who spends time in the woods. Don't miss it.

*Synthetic clothing dries quickly and is the best choice for outdoor pursuits. Please do not wear cotton clothing. When wet, cotton rapidly robs the heat from your body and takes a long time to dry. We also recommend you dress in multiple layers, allowing you more flexibility to comfortably respond to the weather conditions and your level of exertion.
Please call ahead if you plan to use your own equipment as it must pass inspection by L.L.Bean staff before use. If it's deemed unsuitable, we will provide you with the necessary equipment.
