  • Why We Love It

We love to stalk the beaches and rocks of Maine with surf-casting rod in hand in search of big striped bass. No matter the species you're after, this surf rod offers the technical features needed to tackle the surf zone, a place notorious for putting gear to the test. Best of all, it comes with an unbeatable price.

Initial inspection of the rod provides a nice, quality, light rod, with a skinny profile. I purchased the 10', 1-4oz lure, 15-30lb line, Surf Rod. This... more

****UPDATE TO 5/31 REVIEW**** After a few uses at the canal and surf casting from the beach, a few issues I noticed. Primarily, the rod's POWER. Although the action is rated as medium-fast, the power I think is only at medium. This made it fairly difficult to use heavier surface plugs to get the proper action on them. For swimming plugs, this rod worked great. Casting-wise, again I think the power interferes with the cast-ability of some of the heavier lures (3oz). The power may be great for the surf, but might not be enough working against a current like in the Cape Cod Canal. I also did experience some wind-knots while casting, which is strange because I know that the guides used on this rod ("low-ridng/profile") are designed to minimize knots. The guides are also VERY small, specifically the top two, which are tough to slide any swivels or clips through when setting up and breaking down. This rod is also a 10'6" rod, which is actually a bonus! SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT: 1. Make a Medium-heavy power rod to allow for slightly stronger/faster tip action for working surface plugs 2. Increase the diameter of the top two guides by a mm or two to allow for tackle to pass through Otherwise, still a very quality rod. If these two issues can be corrected, I most likely would purchase another!

Not entirely happy with it. The eyes are starting to rust half way through a season... not sure why a surf rod would have components that can rust... I'm going to scuff it and paint it but maybe this should be looked into.
