    Poor GPS
I have used the inReach explorer along side a Garmin GPSMAP 64S. I hike in the White Mountains where the trails are usually forested. The GPSMAP 64S... more

We stand behind our products and want you to know this unit has a default configuration that favors battery life and satellite communication over high detail track logging. The default setting for this unit will log a GPS location once every minute and transmit that location via satellite once every 10 minutes. In-between these 1 and 10 minute tracking intervals the GPS is turned off to conserve battery power, enabling an extended battery life of up to 100 hours. In SOS-mode, this unit prioritizes accuracy. The GPSMAP 64 unit that you mentioned prioritizes accuracy over battery life. The InReach Explorer+ also has an option to send messages with or without an accurate GPS fix, which could have resulted in the 1-mile discrepancy that you mentioned. If you would like more information or to change the default settings on your InReach Explorer+ to favor high detail track logs (at the expense of battery life) this information is available in the Getting Started Guide on the Garmin support site. We will have one of our Product Specialist be in touch to answer any questions or further assist.

After another month of use learning by trial and error, no thanks to the manual, I have finally learned this thing's quirks, and it functions very well. The poor GPS performance mentioned above was because the unit stopped tracking. I had auto tracking turned off and thought that manually pressing "Start" in the tracking menu would be enough. Yesterday, I repeated the same hike with auto tracking on, and it worked perfectly. It shouldn't be this hard. If I could change my rating, I would give it 4 stars, one off for the inadequate manual.

    Too unreliable -
Log interval was set at 2 minutes but recorded every 4 hours. Saftey monitoring crew did not know where I was. I could have died.

We're very sorry that you're dissatisfied with this purchase. We stand behind our products and want you to know this unit has several tracking modes with send Intervals that differ when the user is moving or stationary. In addition, the optional extended tracking mode will increase the time between send intervals to preserve battery life. Despite increasing the send intervals, in an emergency the SOS function will immediately transmit your current location instead of your last tracked position. We'll be in touch to resolve this.
