L.L.Bean Tips for Cold Weather Layering

The familiar Norwegian adage, “there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing,” is mostly offered as an encouragement to get outdoors during cold dark months when frigid temperatures provide plenty of reason to stay indoors. This year, that mantra is especially relevant.

As COVID-19 has forced our social lives into open-air settings, establishments of all types are extending patio season into fall and winter despite cooler temperatures and shorter days. The outdoor heater at the neighborhood cafe will be hard pressed to pack the same punch as patios expand to accommodate guests. So how does one comfortably and warmly dine out while looking stylish enough for socializing?

L.L.Bean Vice President of Merchandise, Anne Smith, says, “It really is all about layers. A warm coat is the most obvious layer, but what’s underneath is just as important, particularly if you’re walking around before or after dining.”

Smith suggests L.L.Bean’s Ultralight 850 Down Series for men, women and children, which touts warmth without weight or bulk, adding, “It is a great shield against wind and the line includes longer versions, hooded options and a new waterproof version for added warmth and comfort.”

Underneath, thin layers are key. Smith recommends the Midweight Base Layer of underlayers to add comfortable warmth without bulk.

Wool or a wool blend makes for an ideal middle layer as it is a great insulator but also breathes, which means it will keep you warm but won’t lead to overheating – a key factor, as there’s no guarantee of peeling off layers once you’ve reached your dining destination. A classic Fisherman’s Sweater or Ragg Wool Sweater is a stylish look that overdelivers on the cozy.

Perhaps most importantly, don’t forget your feet and head. A trendy beanie makes the perfect accessory for keeping warm and looking chic. And for your feet, a nice Merino Wool Ragg Sock inside of a Bean Boot can’t be topped.

Finally, Smith advises to bring a lightweight throw as not every restaurant, cafe or bar will offer them to diners. “Pack a Boat and Tote with all your essentials and include a Wicked Plush Throw for an added layer for yourself or kids to ensure that everyone is comfy and cozy for the entire evening out.”
