Light, comfortable pack with one minor design flaw
This is a generally great pack. It is light for the amount of gear it carries and has enough harness adjustments to find just the right fit. The balance... more

I was literally looking for a bigger day pack for my long Adirondack day hikes when I came across your review. I too know the annoyance of the 'saggy top' problem with my giant backpack lid. Thanks for being specific too about the good stuff. I think I'm going to get this one.

Excessive use of separate pockets and compartments tends to add to the weight of a pack, with diminishing returns w/r/t organization. IMO, good design balances easy access with weight ... but I think at times Bean goes a little too far with bells and whistles on these packs, because good packing can minimize the need for separate pockets. Water bottle pockets are essential, IMO. A hip belt pocket and top pocket are nice but not critical. Beyond that, it gets a little much. My White Mtn pack has a few pockets and access points I'll never use.

Side elastic mesh pockets are usually used for water, perhaps some small food items (bars, nuts). The front mesh pocket is usually used for a layer like a waterproof jacket - easily accessible in case of sudden shifts in weather. People use the belt pockets for many things. I personally use it for small food items, sometimes money, maybe even a small map? Pockets are a personal preference matter. I know hikers who prefer a very basic rucksack (large compartment with maybe only two or three other pockets). I personally prefer more pockets because it lets me organize a bit better. Hope this helps!
