Also LAWalker, These boots are not marketed or described as waterproof. You can do that yourself with a leather protectant. I have for all leather footwear I own. That is on the customer and owner of the boots. Hope that helps! Unless you are in waist high drifts of snow, I do not think the boots are to blame. Again return/ exchange them if they are defective, or you simply don't like them. I have for a pair too small and LL Bean's customer service was great. That's why I buy from them!

Hi there LAWalker, I would discern from your comment that you are not lacing your boots properly. Lacing or rolled down for show is not the same as function. I have both the 16" and 10" shearling leather boots and I have not once had a leak into the boot in sleet, rain, ice or snow. This is why I love them! I wear them without socks or with thin wool socks in 20* degrees +below and never have a problem. If you did get a defective pair, why not exchange them?

While the boots may not be defective, Bean guarantees that you are satisfied with your purchase no matter what. If they do not function as you intended them to, Bean will make good. They will either offer a replacement of a similar boot or issue you a refund. It does not matter if you have used them-how else would you know that they did not work as you expected them to and since many reviewers have stated that they ARE waterproof that is why you purchased them. I would call customer service. They will work with you. Best of luck!

The tongue has a seam about 2 inches up, and that's where the snow gets in -- because the seam makes it impossible to get a tight enough seal between the tongue and the shoe. So the boots aren't defective, but especially if you have ankles on the slender side, there's no way to stop the snow coming in that space. I suspect these boots work better for people with thick ankles, so the shoe might not bunch up in that area. Yesterday I went into the bookshop in our little winter town and was complimented on the boots (they are very nice looking). I complained that they left my feet cold & wet & were relatively useless. The woman said, "Oh, I used to have a pair of LL Bean winter boots that were like that!" I said, "Yes! These are LL Bean!" So apparently leaky snow boots are something they're known for. You have to be very careful to choose a pair with the tongue attached. Thank you to all of you for your advice! As I said in the review: these are good boots for LA winters, but useless in the rain/snow.

Hi again, If your boots are defective, why haven't you returned them? If you read the reviews, you'll find others that live in snow belts that have testified that these boots ARE waterproof so maybe you got a bad pair. They stand by their products and guarantee to make every sale right. You really should send them back or ask for a replacement that works for you. No one should buy a product that does not function as it is supposed to. I would call customer service. They are very accommodating. It's a lot of money for something that you can't use. Sorry to hear that your boots aren't keeping your feet dry as they should. Good luck.

The snow gets in between the tongue and the body of the shoe, not the sole. I'm equally confused by the positive reviews for these boots -- possibly most people aren't using them in snow deeper than 2-3 inches. Even if the tongue were attached to the boot, though, that does not solve the problem of poor insulation & feet going cold after about 10 minutes outdoors. (Obviously it doesn't snow in LA, but some of us do vacation in snowy climates, for which these boots are terrible.)

I am not sure how to comment to your leaky boots but many others, including myself, state that they are indeed snow boots. Mine do not leak at all. I tie them up appropriately and at times will wear my pants inside the boots and still no leaks. Is it possible that the sole is leaking? I was surprised to read your review. I also did not know that it snowed in LA. :)
